Green monday: tradition for children

One of the things I love most about living in Cyprus is how traditions are still woven into everyday life — not as performances, but as pauses.

Green Monday is one of those moments.

It’s simple, really: food, fresh air, kites, company. But there’s something deeply grounding about it. Families gather. Tables are shared. Children run while adults slow down. No expectations, no excess — just presence.

It’s also such a gentle way to introduce tradition to children. They learn that celebration doesn’t always mean buying something new. Sometimes it means going outside, laying out food, flying a kite badly and laughing anyway.

Green Monday reminds us that joy can be collective, slow, and seasonal. And that maybe the most meaningful traditions are the ones that leave space — for conversation, for wind, for doing very little together.
